POP MATTERS REVIEWS YOUNG ANTIQUES

Young Antiques: A Man, Not a Biography

By Jedd Beaudoin 23 November 2011

Atlanta’s Young Antiques return with its first album since 2007’sSoundtrack to Tear Us ApartA Man, Not a Biography is a blazing and bratty post-rock affair that opens with the kick in the teeth of “Gotta Get Over You” and closes with “The Last Thing”, an equally uplifting piece o’ rock. “Tell Me What” serves as a digital bonus track. Blake Rainey, who has released a few fine solo efforts in recent years, penned this material, further evidence of his role as one of the better writers to emerge from the Georgia music scene in recent years. These lads are best when they play it fast and loose, such as on “I Can’t Stand Anymore” and “Fucked Up in Public”. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait four years for the next installment in the Young Antiques story.

A MAN, NOT A BIOGRAPHY.

AUGUST 2011 INSITE MAGAZINE DEAN’S LIST

YOUNG ANTIQUES – A MAN, NOT A BIOGRAPHY (TWO SHEDS) -

Mixing the passionate delivery of the Clash, the beer soaked glory of the Replacements, and the pop-savvy writing of “Surrender”-era Cheap Trick, Atlanta’s own Young Antiques deliver a fresh brand of no nonsense bar rock.  On stage, it is an onslaught of raucous energy from the local trio, and with their latest release, ‘A Man Not A Biography’, the stakes are raised in the studio as well.  Any band would aim to prove themselves a worthy voice to emerge from the crowd, but the Antiques take it a step further, confidently waving the flag on behalf of the ATL’s much needed, often overlooked rock resurgence as of late.

Don’t expect the polish of 2008′s Soundtrack To Tear Us Apart.  In its stead is a mix more indicative of the band’s natural live sound.  ”Come On Let These Girl Blues Go” and “Biography” offer up rock songwriting that stands shoulder to shoulder with output from national acts such as the Hold Steady.  ”Daydream Fields”, the album’s centerpiece, is an angst-filled dirge of sorts, with vocalist/writer/guitarist Blake Rainey lamenting, “There’s no more work/I can’t go back to school/But that’s not what I miss so much.”  Cars-influenced synth work pulses through Supermodel.  Atlanta hideouts like El Myr and the Yacht Club get the Springsteen treatment in the lyrics of the feel-good “Fucked Up In Public”.  Don’t be so naive as to believe it doesn’t work like a charm for this setting.

For being in some peoples minds quite the music industry town, the landscape of great rock bands tends to keep out of reach of any radar regarding the public at large.  In the case of the Young Antiques, the influences they wear on their sleeve serve as a jumping-off point, not a mask to hide behind.  This type of headstrong movement on the part of the band speaks worlds to their potential.  Wherever this takes the Antiques next, it is safe to say that they make Atlanta proud.”  - Jom Latham, InSite Magazine.

Returned and Reviewed!

So, we’re back. For the bazillionth time, thanks to all who came out to the clubs, toasted the record, let us sleep on floors, use laundry machines, cuddle with pets (we should have made a documentary about road pets – you all have some awesome animals out there), bought merch, and welcomed us into the next town and the next and the next. We’ll let you know when we’re out doing it again. (It won’t be long!)

Tour photography is still surfacing, but in the mean time, take a look at this great review by music blog LatestDisgrace.

A teaser: “…if hard-charging rock ‘n’ roll is what you’re looking for, A Man, Not A Biography will be your drink of choice.”

Nice.

Merchin’

Pittsburgh = awesome. Now, one radio appearance and two shows later, we’ve gone on to burn through Cleveland, Urbana ((with a stop in Chi-town for pizza, ice cream, and some lake Michigan beach time), and tonight, we’re headed to Indianapolis. Check the Tour page for details.

Thanks to everyone who came out to see us. You’ll hear from us again when we hit Cincinnati Wednesday.

Only four shows left on the tour!

Adios, NYC.

‘Tiques + Spiders, dark of night, Brooklyn

Thanks, Dirty Spiders (Rush and Adrial immortalized via phone camera above) and Don Pedro’s for having us out last night. Today, we rest in rural PA. Tomorrow, Pittsburgh!

Three things you should know:

9AM, point your internet widgets to WDVE to hear us play live

7PM, point your GPS toward Club Cafe (if you’re in the vicinity)

10PM, just go see us at the 31st Street Pub

That is all.

One show in NYC down, one to go. One more chance for New York friends, fam and fans to see the ‘Tiques before we move on to Pittsburgh for a couple shows and an on-air radio date.

Tonight, catch us at Don Pedro in Brooklyn. In the mean time, check out footage of last night’s show at Arlene’s Grocery!

Sorry for the link out, I’d embed, but cannot for the life of me figure that out. Webmaster fail. :(

And…that was Norfolk

Welcome to the ‘Tiques “UH” tour, 2011!

Thanks to Norfolk – we’re now heading out of town, moving on toward Philly tonight. Stay tuned, we’re winging it here. Blake Rainey may do an impromptu solo show in PA this evening…or not. (We’ll let you know when we do). Either way you should definitely check us out in NYC tomorrow night at Arlene’s Grocery.

Now that’s going to be, uh, epic.

Update: No show tonight in Philly. Catch us tomorrow in NYC and Wednesday in Brooklyn!

Tonight: Raleigh

The ‘Tiques take on Raleigh, NC tonight at Slim’s Downtown. Indyweek said some nice things about us in advance of the show (you can ignore the stuff about Richard Baccus in there…we’re not sure what happened to him, but hope he’s ok). Instead, we’ll be sharing the stage with good friends Kyle and Brandi from The Diamond Center, happily picking up the slack all the way from Richmond VA.

Check them out and check us out tonight, NC friends!

Helllooo Charlotte!

We’re on the road to the great state of North Carolina today, ready to blow the doors off the “World Famous” Milestone Club as the very first stop on our east coast tour. If you’re in the NC area tonight, check out what Creative Loafing Charlotte had to say about us (thanks, guys!), and come out to see us and Transmission Fields. Doors at 8PM, music starts at 9.

Here’s what it’ll sound like, approximately.
